Jurj Tarabishi: Masculinity and the Ideology of Masculinity in the Arabic Novel

جورج طرابيشي، الرجولة وأيديولوجيا الرجولة في الرواية العربية، ١٩٨٣

Jurj Tarabishi. Masculinity and the Ideology of Masculinity in the Arabic Novel. (1983)

As is the case with all but one of Tarabishi's critical works, Masculinity has never been translated from the original Arabic. It is written in Tarabishi's characteristic clear prose, and addresses one of his primary topics of analysis: the construction of masculinity in modern Arab literature.

Tarabishi focuses on two authors, Syrian Hanna Mina (born 1924) and Algerian Mohammed Dib (born 1920). Dib writes in French and Mina in Arabic, significant because it shows that Tarabishi's interest is not Arabic-language fiction, but the construction of masculinity in fiction written by Arabs.
